Steel or Graphite
When choosing what kind of shaft you want on your clubs remember this. The difference between Steel and Graphite with the same flex. A 5 handicapper and a 14 handicapper. The 5 handicapper hit a 7 Iron with a stiff flex in steel and graphite. The 14 handicapper hit a 7 Iron with a regular flex in steel and graphite. A steel shaft works better for the 5 handicapper. He would average 8 more yards in carry distance. A 14 handicapper will be more accurate with a graphite shaft and hit the ball further then with a steel shaft.
Graphite shafts usually have a lower bend points than Steel shafts. It will allow you to hit the ball up in the air easier. Swing speeds around 95 to 100 miles per hour is the range where you can play either steel or graphite shafts. If your tempo is like, lets say Jesper Parnevik who really goes after the ball you will need a steel shaft. Lets say you have a tempo like Ernie Els you will probably be better off with a graphite shaft. What the difference between steel and graphite always comes down to who is swinging the golf club.
If just starting out with golf, I would steer you to play with graphite shafts. If you are an accomplish golfer give steel shafts a try. No matter what shafts you choose just hit the ball solid.
